We are only practicing, we are not killing

We are only practicing, we are not killing. A sentence used by soldiers to explain to civilians and themselves the difference between combat training and warfare. They mean it is hardly so serious, when they shoot at paper figures. As an outside observer however one can`t distinguish between exercise, play and serious. Unless you are told. Movement processes and aggressions are identical. Maybe the smell of death and the screams of the wounded. But even these are simulated. Screaming women and children too. The question must be, when does the war begin – when the first blood flows and destroyed bodies lie around the place? Or is it there already, once the intent to kill is implanted and steers men`s actions. In the foreground of the picture we recognize two US soldiers, shooting at enemy pictures. The figures are recognizable by their traditional dress as Muslim. After the exercise the two soldiers were sent to Iraq.
